Book Cover ImageThis volume captures, in full color, the rich textures and subtle beauty of the Kansas landscape. Selected from more than 4,000 photographs, the images presented here convey the unique feeling, the flavor, the essence of Kansas. They explore the diversity of the terrain, from the stunning splendor of a great field of ripened wheat to the red, brown, and gold mosaic of the Gypsum Hills. They show contrasts, from the clean sculptured curves of the Flint Hills to the fanciful rock formations along the Smoky Hill River. They reveal moods: the drama of a prairie storm, the solitude of a farmhouse at twilight. Some of these photographs have appeared in Kansas! magazine; more than half are published here for the first time.

Kansas in Color is an invitation to celebrate the state's surprising variety and grandeur. In her engaging introduction Zula Bennington Greene writes not only of the state's evolution and heritage, but also of her love for Kansas. All those who share this love will cherish this beautiful book.

"Highlights the contrasts and bounty of the Sunflower State."--Kansas City Star

"A book to enjoy and to share--with pride. The photographs really capture the special flavor of Kansas."--Manhattan Mercury

"The Flint Hills in bloom, the woods in autumn, a small town washed golden by the level sunlight while bruise-blue thunderheads sweep over it . . . It makes you stop and remember, and realize that Kansas is beautiful."--Emporia Gazette
